Silvanus is unhappy at home and at loggerheads with his friends. His father drives him like a slave. But he has a dream. And it seems the grim eagle-shaped god Aquila the Avenger has for once shown him kindness. He found a hoard of precious gems. Perhaps he can buy a boat and escape the stifling Isle of Ilva. But his new-found friend, the ancient hermit Cerbonius, introduces him to a whole new world of ideas and possibilities. Can there be more to life than exploring the world?
