The Romans had two-story houses with door locks, underfloor heating, running hot water, private mills, and silver dishes!

And toilets-for-two next to the stove in the kitchen!

Meat processing

In October 2012 we took our grandson to see the reconstructed Roman village of Augusta Raurica, near Basle. Together with Catherine Aitken’s brilliant children’s booklet, Come and See the Roman House!, this visit provided excellent insights into how a rather well-to-do family would have lived around 200 A.D.

We also saw the in-house smithy and meat-processing facilities. And plenty of other remains in the surrounding area.

Well worth a day trip.
